The use of prayer cloths has its origins in ancient Biblical texts. Traditionally, miraculous healing properties have been attributed to the clothing of various saints and apostles, as well as Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us this miraculous method of healing is found in Acts 19:11-12 which says, “And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.” Other scripture outlining the origin of this belief can be found in Mathew 9:20 and Mathew 14:35-37 in which Jesus heals a multitude of sick and diseased people by simply allowing them to touch a piece of his clothes. It is not the cloth itself that is responsible for the healing, however. Rather, it is the prayer infused in its creation and the subsequent faith accompanying the use of the cloth that brings forth healing. It is a sacred object, and whoever possesses the sacred prayer cloth exercises faith by trusting that God has the power to heal with it.
I create these beautiful prayer cloths using the old-fashioned needlework craft of crochet, as was taught to me by my maternal grandmother who made whole crochet lace bedspreads from the tiniest of threads. The thread is anointed with a special anointing oil containing myrrh, sage, and Palo Santo in a base of pure Olive Oil from Israel. In addition, prayers are said during the creation process. The old-fashioned technique, combined with prayerful anointing creates a sacred square of cloth, perfect for praying for comfort and miracles.
