In New Orleans Voudou, St. Expedite is syncretized with the lwa Baron Samedi, the spirit of death, guardian of the cemeteries and head of the family of ancestral spirits called the Guede. In fact, some circles refer to Baron Samedi as St. Expedite almost as if the two are one and the same. For example, St. Expedite plays an important role in the opening ceremony of Mardi Gras. To the general public, Mardi Gras simply looks like a party in the streets—and indeed it is. However, there are much deeper mysteries at play that are related to Voudou that the average person is completely unaware of. Mardi Gras follows a specific procession, starting with the North Side Skull and Bones Gang who represent St. Expedite. According to Spiritualist Cinnamon Black with the New Orleans Voodoo Museum, “St. Expedite sits at the gates of the cemetery and comes alive at about 4:00 in the morning in Congo Square, here in New Orleans, where they practice a ritual and pray for the beginning of Mardi Gras” (Black, 2011).
This candle is made for the specific purpose of doing cemetery or ancestral work with St. Expedite and Baron Samedi. Complete instructions for this conjure can be found on page 106 of The Conjurer's Guide to St. Expedite (Graveyard Work with St. Expedite). This candle can be used in place of the two candles called for in the ritual (1 red for St Expedite and 1 black for Baron Samedi) because it is a representation of both the Baron and St. Expedite. The other candle needed is a white candle for the Holy Trinity, which can be found here. You may also use the candle any time you wish to contact your ancestors and anytime you go to the cemetery or work with graveyard spirits and graveyard dirt.
This candle bears my original graphic artwork of St. Expedite as Baron Samedi along with a prayer that is said when you petition St. Expedite and Baron Samedi for the purpose of naming St. Expedite as your patron saint for cemetery work, with the permission of Baron Samedi. Add this candle to your collection of St. Expedite candles only available here at Creole Moon. This candle comes in full color or in sepia tone. Both are very beautiful!
Voodoo Mama's Conjure Candles will burn for approximately seven days or 120 hours. They can be reused once they have burned down as vases for holding flowers, turned into a container spell to keep on your altar or refilled with wax to burn again. They are simply too beautiful to throw away and the creative conjurer will find many possibilities for using the decorative glass container once the original wax has burned down. The exception to this is when the candle is burned for nefarious purposes. The remains should be thrown in a trash can away from your home or left at a crossroads with an offering.
