Witches' Ladders are an old type of charm that originated in Europe. There are any number of theories as the purpose of the first ones found by outsiders (i.e,other than witches), from preventing a farmer's cows to provide milk to cursing and curing. Some suggest the feathers used must be from a live bird. Some say the feathers must be from a black rooster. The fact is, the folkloric literature is full of conjecture. That said, the idea behind the witches' ladder is that it is a rope of no specific length, with any number of knots and feathers tied into it. Special incantations or prayers are said during the process, and intensified during the tying of each knot.
