Krampus is commonly referred to as the "antiSanta" because he essentially represents the polar opposite of St. Nicholas. The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen). In German folklore of the Alpine region, Krampus is represented as a sort of Christmas devil complete with horns and cloven hooves. One of the Companions of St. Nicholas found in Eastern European traditions, Krampus wanders the streets in chains and bells punishing children who have misbehaved.
