Mimosa is a beautiful tree with surprisingly wide application in Southern folk magic. It is associated with love, strength and empowerment, and used to elicit prophetic dreams as well as to protect from nightmares. In Hoodoo, mimosa is known as "Shame Boy" because as the "Sensitivity Plant," when it is touched the leaves will close. Thus, by virtue of the Doctrine of Signatures, the plant is used to shame someone from harming another. The goal of the conjure is to have the target drop a lawsuit, back down from opposing you, pay back money that is owed and the like. In this capacity, the plant must be collected in a specific ritual fashion, by running the hand over the plant three times stating the individual's name who is the target of the conjure followed by "(Name), shame on you." It can then be collected and further prepared in conjure formulas and works.
