Oregano is known for its savory, slightly bitter flavor and  fragrance, as well as its culinary and medicinal properties. It has a long history of use among indigenous peoples as a treatment for colds and other respiratory ailments.  Oregano has a multitude of uses in conjure and rootwork and is a most handy herb to have around, esecially if you are in business for yourself and need to keep your finances safe from unscrupulous meddlers. It is also used in folk magic for influencing court cases to resolve favorably. Oregano is a  perennial herb with purplish or whitish flowers that flowers in late summer July-August.

Parts used: Fresh or dried sprigs, leaves, flowers, essential oil.

Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic/Industrial. Considered a comforting herb.

Folklore and Esoteric Uses
Considered by ancient Greeks to be the joy of the mountains and a symbol of peace, harmony happiness. Believed it was precious to Aphrodite, goddess of love, and they used it to crown newlyweds on their wedding day.

In Hoodoo, it can be used in Happy Times and Joy conjure oil and powder formulas and in love, luck and good fortune mixtures and mojos. Good for use on floor washes to cleanse away unpleasant odors and to draw good luck and fortune.

Medicinal Use and Folk Remedies
Medicinal properties: anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, calmative, carminative, and emmenagogue.

Benefits: Bruises, colds, constipation, coughs, flatulence, headache, head congestion, menstrual problems, muscular aches and stiffness, sore throats, strains, rheumatism.

The medicinal qualities of the oil extracted from Sweet Marjoram - Oleum majoranae - are similar to that of the Wild Marjoram. Fifteen ounces of the oil are yielded by 150 lb. of the fresh herb. On being kept, it assumes a solid form. It is used as an external application for sprains and bruises, and also as an emmenagogue. In powdered form the herb forms part of certain Sneezing Powders. Oil of marjoram placed in a cavity will alleviate toothache. Marjoram tea alleviates tension headaches and minor digestive upsets. A strong infusion or essential oil added to bathwater, an ointment, or a compress of marjoram can be used for rheumatic pain. Calms the nerves and  relieves stress.
