OWN A PIECE OF INTERNET HISTORY
Do you remember the website milliondollarhomepage.com? Well, it was a website created in 2005 by an individual named Alex Tew to pay off his student loan debt. Basically, he sold advertising space to companies from around the world. Customers purchased one or more of the 10,000 tiny boxes that appear on the site's homepage for $100.00 each. Of course, at that time very little was online representing the folk magic, metaphysical and occult communities, but I am aiming to change that.
For the same reason Tew started his milliondollarhomepage.com site, I am promoting this idea as a last resort for ever getting free from my student loan debt. It used to be that getting a graduate degree was a good thing, but for me - other than getting an education - it has brought more negative than positive. At 57 years old, I will never qualify for those high paying jobs that a younger candidate qualifies for; yet, I am stuck with student loans that there is no way I will be able to pay off in my lifetime. One of my degrees was never conferred because I ran out of money to pay for it; so I am paying for an advanced degree I cannot formally use. I can honestly say that as a result of the stress of having so much student loan debt, my quality of life has decreased dramatically - both physically and materially - which certainly was not the goal of pursuing an advanced education.
My initial strategy for paying my way through graduate school was to write ebooks and sell them to pay my tuition. Initially, the idea worked. My first book, the Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook did very well, and if it weren't for pirates, my loans would have been paid for a long time ago. One website alone shows the book downloaded illegally over 1 million times. If I had even gotten $1 for each download life would look very differently than it does now. Piracy cost me my degree and the ability to use my education in the manner in which it was designed to be used.
Many people do not realize the impact of piracy on authors and artists. The impact on musicians is well known, but the attitude of the general public is similar for books, art, and music. The prevailing sentiment is that information, art, and music on the internet should be free. This is not a stance I agree with, as an author, artist, and musician. It can take months or even years to finish a book or piece of artwork, and no one is paying me for that creation time. Payday comes after the product is finished, after it is promoted on the internet and sold. When people download an image or a book for free - illegally - I am robbed of my paycheck. I am robbed of my retirement. I am robbed of my right to insurance. I don't know about you, but I have yet to meet someone who thinks its okay for their paycheck to be stolen.
So, I am borrowing Tew's idea for owning a piece of internet history. One thing I have to offer is internet real estate and traffic. One thing the internet doesn't have is a million dollar home page to document the presence of folk magic and the occult on the internet. Until now, that is.
I am offering space for sale to folks from any industry (except for adult porn sites and hate sites) to advertise their businesses and services. My hope is that the conjure and folk magic communities will dominate since this is my demographic. This will be one page filled with hopefully many little boxes of logos of entrepreneurs from the conjure and pagan communities, new age sites, metaphysical sites, bookstores, jewelry makers, boho wares, and so forth. Each image will link to the url of your choice and will get a shout out to my email lists of over 10,000 subscribers and counting. Once your listing is posted, it will be regularly archived in the Wayback machine and will remain on the internet forever, or until the internet is no more. Once I get 100 listings, I will move this page to its own domain and homepage where it will be the only page of the site (aside from contact and terms pages). This page will remain here on creolemoon.com, so if you get in early on the project, you will in essence get two perpetual, historical listings.
