On December 14, 2017 the US Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines to repeal landmark 2015 rules aimed at ensuring a free and open internet, setting up a court fight over a move that could recast the digital landscape. The approval of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s proposal marks a victory for internet service providers like AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. and hands them power over what content consumers can access (https://nypost.com/2017/12/14/fcc-repeals-landmark-net-neutrality-rules/). This change is a win for big corporations and a loss for you, the every day American who has enjoyed a free and open internet since its inception.
FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, a Democrat, said in the run-up to the vote that Republicans were “handing the keys to the internet” to a “handful of multibillion-dollar corporations” (https://nypost.com/2017/12/14/fcc-repeals-landmark-net-neutrality-rules/). The current narrative suggests consumers are unlikely to see immediate changes resulting from the rule change, but smaller online businesses like Creole Moon worry that the lack of restrictions could drive up costs or lead to their content being blocked.
To prepare for the very real possibility that these multi-billion dollar corporations will create content channels that you - the consumer - will be unable to access unless you pay for it, much like cable TV packages, for example, Creole Moon is preparing to fully develop the mail order aspect of the business, returning to snail mail in an effort to continue to provide the information, products, and services our patrons have come to rely on.
I have been online for twelve years and will keep my business online for as long as it is economically feasible. Developing the mail order business will insure that those customers who may not be able to afford the added financial burden of paying for internet content packages will be able to continue to benefit from Creole Moon's mission of providing reliable information about Southern folk traditions and indigenous spiritual and religious lifeways by joining our Mail Order Conjure Tribe.
Still in its early conception stage, my Mail Order Conjure Tribe will be able to receive a product catalog and a monthly zine much like a blog in print form. Conjure Courses will be available via snail mail as well. Essentially, you can look forward to receiving mail from me the old-fashioned way. I promise to keep discretion in mind, with catalogs and zines sent in plain brown envelopes. If you would like to be part of my Conjure Tribe, please provide your information in the form below so that I can contact you when we roll out in 2022.
