Devil's Shoestring is the common name used to refer to a number of plants in the species Viburnum. Generally, Devil’s Shoestring is hobblebush (Viburnum alnifolium), cramp bark (Viburnum opulus) or black haw (Viburnum prunifolium). Viburnum is native to southeastern North America, from Connecticut west to eastern Kansas, and south to Alabama and Texas.
In Hoodoo, it is the long roots of the various Viburnum plants that are used in conjure works. Devil’s shoestring is a multipurpose root, with uses ranging from tripping up the devil to protecting from goofer dust and hot foot to bringing luck in gambling, getting a job and keeping the law away.
